Special Education Program –
Introduction To Building Technology

Introduction to Building Trades Technology CIP 469999 (grade 9-10)

Building Trades Technology is a course designed for students in grades 9 and 10 who have special needs. It is a basic program for students who wish to explore careers in the various construction pathways including carpentry, electrical, masonry and basic plumbing skills.

Course One:
Students will be instructed in general safety principles as well as workplace safety. They will become familiar with the proper use of the tools of each of the concentrations beginning with carpentry. Students will have hands-on experience in measuring, sawing, and building various projects.

Course Two:
Students will learn basic electricity skills and understand electrical circuitry. They will engage in hands-on experiences in rough wiring such as running electrical wires, and wiring lights. They will be engaged in applied mathematics throughout the two year program.

Students will learn basic skills in masonry including mixing cement compounds, measuring for accuracy, and determining the amount of materials need for a specific project. Students will learn to lay brick and block. All aspects of the construction trades will be discussed including resume writing, job application completion. Students will photograph their completed projects for placement on their digital portfolio. If the students exhibit good math skills, they will have the opportunity to enter the carpentry, or electrical programs in their grade 11 year.

Course Three:
The last course introduces plumbing including the use of measuring tools, and basic soldering. They will learning the basic skills of rigging and hoisting, how to solder and braze, and what to do when excavating a site. Students will become familiar with building and plumbing codes as well.

Students will work on workplace readiness skills and explore career choices within these construction disciplines.
