Introduction To Auto/Diesel Technology
Introduction to Auto Technology CIP: 470605 (grade 9-10)
Many students enter this program with only love of anything automotive. This course is designed for grade 9 and 10 special needs students. The course is devoted to specific competencies that prepare them for auto technology for grade 11 and 12 or for diesel technology depending on their interest.
Course One:
This program begins with orientation to hand and power tools and lifting equipment and how safely to use them in the lab and workplace. The students then learn about chassis and power train service, and automatic transmission service. They are introduced to the various brake systems and wheel and tire design and service. Introduction to suspension and steering systems and diagnosis and repair of these systems is learned. Finally exhaust and emissions systems are introduced for diagnosis and repair.
Course Two:
Students learn Electrical and Basic Tune-up including an introduction to electricity, basic circuit design, battery and generator design and service. Ignition systems are also learned. Along with the classroom theory, students engage in hands-on experiences in the auto lab. Engine designs, operating techniques, component identification and basic service techniques are taught in this course. Throughout the two-year program applied math is learned.
Course Three:
The final course in this program is devoted to learning welding procedures and safety, auto body repair techniques, and diesel/truck specific service and safety. This is a challenging year as the students must use previous knowledge in a hands-on experience. If their math learning has been successful, and their skill level permits, students move on into the other auto technology programs. If they don’t, they can remain in this program learning to improve their skills.
