Career Technical Education - Course Descriptions
Auto Body I Grade 11

The first year of the program serves to prepare 11th grade secondary student with 540 hours of instruction to become entry level employees in a $30 billion auto body industry.

Students will experience a variety of basic skills while working on school or privately-owned vehicles repairing, replacing or refinishing panels or whole vehicles.  Such repairs during the first year will provide basic skills and experience with hand tools, power tools, auto body materials, spray equipment, metal cutting and welding equipment, and other tools common to the automobile repair industry. 


Auto Body II Grade 12

The second year of the program serves 12th grade students with an additional 540 hours of instruction.  Students will acquire knowledge to become entry level employees in a $30 billion industry.

Students in the 2nd year of the Auto Body program will progress to higher levels of skills and experience by repairing and refinishing school and privately owned vehicles needing more extensive repair.  They will write estimates for repairs on such vehicles.  Greater experience is obtained by working with a variety of hand tools, power tools, auto body materials, spray equipment, metal cutting and welding equipment, hydraulic unitized body and frame straightening equipment.  Skills acquired through this 2 year program prepare students for related industries such as tractor trailer and commercial bus repair, new truck body and boat manufacturing, industrial maintenance, welding and refinishing careers in manufacturing settings,  and insurance company appraiser careers to name a few.


Introduction to Automotive and Diesel Technology  Year I

Many students enter this program with only a love for anything automotive.  During our time together, we learn basic tool identification and the safe usage of both hand and power tools.  Customer relation skills, teamwork, and basic computer skills are also taught as components of each study area.  During the first year, the student will learn automotive trade related terms, allowing the student to communicate effectively within the classroom with parts supply houses and as a preparation for the more advanced classes that they will take upon course completion.  Time is devoted to specific competencies preparing them for Auto Technology & Diesel Technology.


Introduction to Automotive and Diesel Technology  Year II

The second year is designed to continue preparing students for job opportunities in the constantly expanding field of Automotive Service, or for mainstreaming in Auto Body, Auto Technology, or Diesel Technology.  At the same time, employable skills are provided in the areas of exhaust system repair, lubrication, and oil change service, brake work, tire repair & replacement, computerized wheel balancing and auto detail work.  The student will also gain a basic knowledge of the materials and equipment used by Automotive & Diesel Service Technicians including meters, measuring instruments, shop manuals, and internet-based information resources.  During our second year together, specific competencies must be practiced and mastered for the student to proceed into the more advanced classes the following year.


Automotive Technology  11th & 12th grades

The auto tech program is based upon the eight areas of vehicle repair as designated by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).  Successful completion of this two-year training program will provide the skills necessary to maintain gainful employment as an entry-level automotive technician.

Throughout the first year of study, the student will identify components, tools, and procedures to repair brake, steering, suspension, electrical and electronic, heating and air conditioning systems.  Instruction is a blend of both classroom and hands-on activities.  Along with hand and power tools, students will become proficient with the study of brake disc and drum lathes, tire balancing, wheel alignment, refrigerant recovery, and electronic diagnostic equipment.
The second year of training highlights engine performance, engine overhaul, transmission, and differential repair.  Students will troubleshoot and repair “bugged” training vehicles as well as remove, overhaul, and reinstall engines.  Diagnostic equipment includes on-board-computer scan tools, lab scopes, emissions testing, and chassis dynamometer equipment.

The program is fully accredited by ASE (NATEF.org) and offers job placement opportunities to qualifying students in partnership with the Automotive Youth Educational Systems (www.ayes.org).  Students will receive student ASE certification upon successful completion.


Carpentry & Building Technology

This is an innovative course designed for the novice student, interested in pursuing a career in the field of Carpentry and Building Technology.  Students will be skilled in proper use of hand and power tools, basic print reading, and current building code.  Students will measure, saw, level and nail wood and other building materials.  This course provides students with the basic skills to enter and compete in the field of carpentry.

As part of this program, students will work cooperatively with the electrical trades students and the plumbing/HVAC students to construct a house in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity. This gives the students practical experience as well as a tremendous sense of pride.

To be a Carpenter is to be a member of one of the oldest and most respected trades.  Students can build a lifetime career in carpentry, if they like working with tools and like to create things.  Why not hammer out a well-built future with training in Carpentry and Building Technology?


Computer Aided Drafting and Design (11th and 12th Grade)

The Computer Aided Drafting and Design Technology program at Atlantic County Institute of Technology begins with an introduction to the AutoCAD software and other tools used in the computer aided drafting and design field. The initial focus of this course will introduce the student to the fundamental commands used in creating basic AutoCAD drawings. 

As students become proficient in the AutoCAD program students will learn some of the basic engineering and architectural vocabularies, design standards, and other construction methods, used in the industry. Students prepare working drawings reflecting practices and procedures in the fields of Architecture and Engineering.
 
Second year students typically find employment as entry level drafts persons in the fields of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Surveying, Landscape Design, construction, and related areas.


Introduction to Commercial Foods

This 9th and 10th grade course is designed to introduce basic cooking and baking skills to the High School student.  In the first year of the course the focus is on knife skills, cooking methods, identification and use of tools and equipment, preparation of soups, stocks, sauces, meats, poultry, seafood, salads, dressings, and breakfast foods.
The second year of the course focuses on production of yeast dough, cakes, cake decorating, cookies, pastries, pies, ice cream and candy.  The student will learn about menu planning and design.  They will refine their resume and interviewing techniques in preparation for future employment. 

This 2 year course prepares a student for entry level employment in the food service industry.


Cosmetology 11th & 12th Grades

This course is designed to obtain the skills necessary to become a licensed cosmetologist.

First year students will learn hairstyling, haircutting, hair coloring, facials, manicures, pedicures, skin care, shampooing, scalp and hair treatments, permanent waving, physical chemical relaxing, thermal curl, barbering and shaving.

Second year students will master and refine skills necessary to take and pass New Jersey state boards and be successful in salons.  Students will have the opportunity to work in a clinical setting under direct supervision of instructor.  All curriculums are competency based evaluating hands-on performance until mastery.


Dental Assisting 11th and 12th Grade

This course will enable students to develop the basic knowledge and skills required for an entry-level position as a dental assistant.  During the first year, emphasis will be on tooth identification, models, impressions, and restorative/cosmetic dentistry.  Students will use the computers to perform dental business office activities such as making appointments and completing insurance forms. 

The second year will broaden the student’s knowledge of dental anatomy, dental materials, infection control procedures and the specialties of dentistry including oral surgery, pediatric dentistry and orthodontics.  Chairside dental procedures are acquired through hands-on activities using the lab’s modern dental equipment and instruments.  New technologies, materials and procedures are highlighted in both years.

Second year students may qualify for a co-op position in a local dental office.  They will also become CPR certified through the American Heart Association.


Diesel Technology  (11th and 12th Grades)

The Diesel Technology program is a two year course.  It provides practical experience in the repair and maintenance of engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, clutch transmissions, hydraulics, driveline axles, frame suspension, and diesel truck and tractor steering.  Students receive instruction in diagnosing, diesel engine analysis, disassembling engines, replacing defective parts, reassembling, etc.  The program mission is to provide technical instruction and skill development to enable students to enter employment in truck, construction, agricultural equipment, marine, and other related fields in Diesel Technology.  Hourly earnings of bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists are $17.20 to $25.67 an hour as of May 2004.
Voluntary certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is the recognized industry credential for diesel service technicians and mechanics.


Electrical Trades I & II

Open to students in the 11th and 12th grades.  This course offers an introduction to the concepts of Electrical Technology.  Classroom and shop instruction introduces the student to electrical safety, tools, math, electrical theory, National Electrical Code, conductors, wiring methods, blueprint reading, and construction with apprenticeship curriculum.  The Skills USA student organization provides additional opportunities for leadership and competitive events at local and state levels.  General apprenticeship and trade opportunities with our CIE Coordinator start anywhere from $10 to $14/hour as an entry-level wage to $26/hour for experienced tradesmen and women.


Fashion Careers- Intro  9th & 10th Grades

This course will take a student’s love of clothing and combine it with creativity in the form of fashion sewing and design to provide you with the ability and know how not only to sew your own clothing, but to guide you toward a career in the needle trades.  Students will have the opportunity to create their own garments and model them in the school’s annual fashion show.  Students learn the operation of power sewing machines, basic dressmaking techniques, clothing alterations and repairs, color analysis, basic tailoring and construction of some interior design items.


Fashion Careers/Fashion & Design II – 11th & 12th Grades
The focus of this course is to enhance the sewing and design skills students have acquired in Fashion & Design I.  Students’ will have the opportunity to learn many advanced techniques including the use of advanced power sewing machine techniques, advanced dressmaking, pattern alterations, tailoring, repairs to ready-to-wear garments, and instruction of more interior design items.  Once again, you will be able to show off your talents in the school’s annual fashion show.  After successful completion of this course, students will have the opportunity to continue their study of Fashion & Design by taking Fashion & Decoration.


Fashion Design & Decoration  11th & 12th Grades

Students entering this program will acquire the basic knowledge needed for all areas of the fashion industry.  They will learn to safely operate a variety of industrial sewing machines, the identification and use of all pressing equipment, and hand tools of the trade.  They will be introduced to style and line, figure analysis, color theory, garment construction, textiles, and numerous hand sewing techniques, thus also learning the language of the trade. 

Advanced students will have the opportunity to learn professional tailoring, interior design, window displays, and basic upholstering.  Related math skills needed in this profession are also taught.  Upon satisfactory completion of this two-year program, the student will have the entry level skills needed to begin work in all areas of the fashion industry.


Medical Assisting Grade 11 & 12

Medical Assistants are projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the next ten years. This is a two year course designed to give students entry-level management and clinical skills to assist the physician in treating patients as well as administrative tasks in the office.  This course provides a good medical foundation toward other health care careers such as nursing.  Students will learn both clinical and administrative skills.  Theory and practice will also be included.  Courses such as medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, vital signs, phlebotomy, electrocardiology, pharmacology, medical laboratory skills, administration/finance and medical law will be covered. Clinical affiliations include a nursing home rotation two days a week for five months in the first year of the program.  Area grade school health screens are performed by first year students as well.

Second year students will complete their clinical affiliations at an area hospital two days a week for the last five months of school.  Area grade school health screenings are performed in October for one week.  Students in their second year may apply for the school to work program.  Employment must be in the health care field.  Students are eligible to sit for the nationally recognized Certified Medical Assistant Certification prior to graduation.  Students are also CPR/First Aid certified through the American Heart Association.  College credits can be obtained from an articulation agreement through UMDNJ.  Tests are available in the second year to obtain these credits.


Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning  Grade 11 & 12

This is a two year course. The course is designed to acquaint students with entry level plumbing.  They will learn bathroom installation, water heaters, boilers, and pumps.  The student will be introduced to hot and cold water supply installation, drainage and sewer, water closets, bathtubs, and showers.  Blueprint reading will also be introduced as well as sketching.

HVAC is introduced in the second year of the course.  Students will learn all about controls and control circuits.  Rules and regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency will be discussed.  Students will advance towards taking EPA and ICE exams. How to recover refrigerants, charge systems, perform leak checks and troubleshoot central systems and gas/oil fired heaters. Our CIE program allows students to work for contractors in the Atlantic County area while attending ACIT.
