Shared Time Program –
Allied Health

Dental Assistant: CIP510601
This course will enable 11th and 12th grade students to develop the basic knowledge and skills required for an entry-level position as a dental assistant. All curriculum is competency based, evaluating hands-on performance until mastery.

Course One:
Introduction to Dental Assisting will emphasize tooth identification, charting, models, impressions and restorative/cosmetic dentistry. Students will use the computers to perform dental business office activities such as patient registration and medical/dental histories.

Course Two:
Preparing for Work will broaden the student’s knowledge of dental anatomy, dental materials, infection control procedures and the specialties of dentistry including prosthodontics and orthodontics. A more extensive front office computer course will include appointment scheduling and processing dental insurance claims. There will also be a focus on personal and professional qualities suitable to the area dental offices.

Course Three:
Applied Dental Assisting encourages students to apply their dental skills through ACIT’s co-op program. As employed dental assistants, they can hone their chair side and front office skills. In-class support will be available weekly to strengthen and enhance the students’ knowledge and skills mastery. Students engage in applied mathematics instruction and learning throughout the two-year program. Students take the Dental Association exam at the end of the program.

Medical Assistant: CIP 510801
The Medical Assistant Program is a two year course offered to 11th/12th grade students. The course is designed to give the student entry-level management and clinical skills to assist the physician treat patients as well as administrative tasks in the office. All curricula are competency based evaluating hands on performance until mastery. Students are eligible to sit for the nationally recognized Certified Medical Assistant Exam prior to graduation. Students are also eligible for American Heart Association CPR Certification.

The student will develop skills needed for entry- level jobs in health care settings, such as medical offices, nursing homes (unit secretaries, activities dept., etc.)hospitals and pharmacies. During the third course, students are eligible to participate in the school-to- work program. Students are also eligible for college credits through UMDNJ upon completion of required criteria.

Course One:
Students are given an introduction to healthcare, basic medial terminology, and anatomy & physiology, part one. They learn about infection control and the promotion of safety. They have hands-on experience in taking vital signs. Students engage in applied mathematics instruction and learning throughout the two-year program. As part of all aspects of medical assisting, students learning about medical law and ethics as well as basic administrative skills. One area of medicine that they explore at this time is gerontology.

Course Two:
Students engaged in technical skills including computer skills, electro cardiology skills, and CPR/First aid procedures including AED training. Students also learn about nutrition and diets, medical laboratory assistant skills and participate in Health Occupations Students of America competition.
[130 hours]
Students engage in a clinical experience in a nursing home internship.
[100 hours]
They also perform area school health screening as part of the clinical experience.
[20 hours]

Course Three:
This year long course takes the students through advanced medical terminology and Anatomy and Physiology Part two. Students learn about human growth and development, pharmacology, phlebotomy and other medical specialties. For all aspects of medical assisting, students learning advanced administrative skills, medical billing, insurance coding as well as job seeking and career skills. Students are encouraged to have paid jobs in conjunction with the Cooperative Industrial Education program (CIE) after they complete their internship.
[420 hours]

Students participate in a hospital internship in area hospitals [120 hours].
Students take the National Medical Assistant exam for certification at the end of the program.
